“Light is my medium”

Artist Statement

My work explores the emotional truths held in the heart, expressed through the language of relationships, vulnerability, and light. While working with many different materials, I gravitate towards two main disciplines: Photography and Neon. While each of these materials has strong differences, both visually and conceptually, they both deal with an aspect of light. One captures a moment of light in time, the other creates it.

In the age of digital photography where holding one’s entire portfolio online is common, creating a physically printed image has grown to be a central focus of my work. The texture of an image can hold much detail, details of which can be lost in a sea of pixels. When working with Neon it gives many artists a sense of awe, like so many other mediums. But with neon, the sense of wonder lingers long after the satisfaction of creating another work. Light working with light, can constrict it, or expand it. This combination of mediums drives my creative practice and expands my definition of photography, and space. To “break one’s frame”, can also mean to break one’s expected mold or expectations. Those expectations of materiality and metaphysical emotions are what drive my work to go beyond its frame.
